Many new projects were initiated in 2011. A few of these include:

Production-related:

  • Quantifying genetic differences in seed losses due to pod drop and pod shatter
  • Blackleg resistance stewardship: improving our management of host resistance
  • Mitigating blackleg disease of canola using fungicide strategies
  • Rapid farm-level detection of blackleg pathotypes – proof of concept
  • Advanced statistical analysis of strip-plot and small-plot canola variety data

Trait-related:

  • Genomics of clubroot disease development in canola
  • Final phase to improve the 'hairy canola' trait
  • Identification of genes suitable for marker-assisted clubroot resistance genes
  • Characterization and utilization of new sources of clubroot resistance
  • Identifying virulence factors in blackleg disease of canola

New Uses of Canola:

  • Adding nutritive value to vegetable protein meals and legume seeds
  • Close coupled gasification combustion of raw glycerin and canola hull fiber
